Complexion essentials + new beauty buys

Hi lovelies and welcome back to another beauty post! Today I’d like to share a few new beauty buys that I love and recommend. The first part is dedicated to a flawless complexion and the second part is for a few little beauty treasures that I found.

Complexion essentials

I’ve been on the search for the perfect  foundation lately. One that has good full coverage (that covers imperfections & pores), long lasting and one that would be very light & natural feeling as if I am not wearing anything on my skin at all. That would be the definition of the perfect foundation in my eyes.

I went to Priceline pharmacy when they had a massive %50 off Maybelline sale and I picked up a couple of things after careful consideration of what would be perfect for me.

My skin is normal-combination skin, not dry and not oily. It tends to get a bit oily on my nose as I go through the day but nothing major. Therefore I picked a foundation for normal skin. I have a light-medium skin tone but my face tends to be on the light side: ‘light’, ‘ivory’ and ‘neutral’ foundation shades. I got the Maybelline Super Stay 24 hour foundation in ’10 ivory’- a warm toned light beige with yellow undertones. It fits my complexion perfectly. It has full coverage just as promised by the ladies at the pharmacy, and it applied best using a damp beauty blender. I like to first put a few little pumps of foundation on the back of my hand, dip in the beauty blender and ‘bounce’ & blend it all around my face. It really gives me an airbrushed flawless look which I love. This foundation is not sticky and feels very light on my face. Having said that, applying this foundation must be followed by a setting powder as it does tend to transfer badly if not. It covers blemishes and such but not completely, and I do notice my pores with this one. It lasts on for a few good hours, I wouldn’t say it stays on perfectly for 24 hours, it would definitely need a touch up. Overall for what I paid I am quite satisfied with this one. I’ve heard great things about Maybelline’s Fit Me! Matte + Poreless foundation so I’d love to give that a try next.

I also picked up the new Maybelline ‘Master Conceal’ concealer in ’20 light’.

This is a new release from Maybelline and let me tell you it is nothing like your average drugstore concealer! It has full coverage (it’s completely opaque when applied) and it’s very thick & creamy in consistency. I’d compare it to high end brands in terms of quality and results.

The ’20 light’ colour is very light cool toned yellow beige. I like to put a little bit of product on the back of my hand (when I say a little bit I mean it! A little goes a long way with this one), and either using my fingers or my beauty blender to highlight under my eyes, over the lip area, chin, bridge of the nose and forehead if you like. Then I blend it using the beauty blender, I simply tap until it blends to my desire. Although it is very thick and creamy, it blends into the skin flawlessly without caking or creasing.

For compact powder I tried a new brand I’ve never used before called ‘3ima beauty’ (Mina beauty).

First I’ve heard of this cosmetics brand was on one of the beauty accounts I’m following on Instagram. They have a couple of stores here in Melbourne and I picked up my powder from their Melbourne central store. The store is beautifully designed and has a lot of colorful products to offer. The quality seems good on most products and the prices are reasonable and affordable (drugstore prices).

I got the 3ina compact powder in shade 204 which is the darkest shade they stocked. It is a warm toned brown beige suitable for medium-dark skin tones. I wanted a more tanned/medium finish to my makeup look although thinking about it now after using it, I could’ve gone a shade or 2 lighter.

This powder feel so soft to the touch, almost creamy but not really because it is a pressed powder. It feels like velvet and sits nicely on the skin. It has light to full coverage and can be built up to the coverage of your desire. I personally like to use it as a finishing powder so I use it lightly with a duo fiber brush all over the face after applying my foundation & concealer. Using powder after foundation to finish off the look is essential as it helps setting up the makeup and it makes sure the makeup doesn’t ‘move’ or transfer throughout the day. It also helps to mattify the complexion and to reduce shine and oiliness.

If you don’t want to use coloured powder as your setting powder, why not use a translucent finishing powder? I’m currently using Nude by Nature ‘Mineral Finishing Veil’. It is a lightweight, loose white powder which ‘disappears’ as you dust it along the face. This powder helps setting your makeup for a full day wear, prevents stickiness and controls shine with a semi matte finish. Lightly dust with a large powder brush all over the face, focusing mainly on oily areas, or you can use this to ‘bake’ under the eyes and enhance your highlighting/contouring.

New beauty buys

I love hopping on a train to the city and check out what’s new in Sephora. It is beauty heaven for us makeup junkies and I love going around to see the different brands they stock and what new beauty products they have to offer. As I was waiting in line to pay, I noticed a cute little box containing a mini lipstick + nailpolish duo by Kat Von D beauty & Formula X.

The 2 brands teamed up to create a line of matching nail colours to popular Kat Von D lipsticks. The idea of having a tiny little lipstick in my collection appealed to me and so I couldn’t resist purchasing it. I can cary it in my bag, clutch or even my pocket when I’m going out and it would fit in perfectly. What I loved even more is the idea of matching my nail colour to my lipstick, I think it is super cute!

The colour is simply stunning: described as ‘a metallic candy apple red’, it is a bright deep red with a metallic golden sheen finish. The consistency of the lipstick is not very creamy yet not too dry: It is just in between. It has full opaque coverage and it is long wearing. The nail polish by ‘Formula X’  seems a bit warmer toned than the lipstick yet it is an extremely close match. I usually don’t wear red nailpolish but I must admit, I simply love this on my nails! It is such a unique colour!

Another handy new beauty buy is the NYX wonder pencil.

It is a multi use pencil that can be used as a spot concealer, nude eyeliner or as a reverse lip liner (to prevent lipstick from ‘bleeding’ outside the lip line). Available in 3 shades, I got the ‘light’ shade as I was looking for a nice creamy nude eyeliner to apply on my waterline to brighten and widen my eyes. It is just perfect for that purpose and it is extremely long lasting. I love that it’s multi purpose because I can use it for all the other things as well!

My next beauty purchase was from TopShop. In case you didn’t know, TopShop sell their own makeup brand in store and some of the range is quite impressive. I love checking out their makeup section for new things and I found this Topshop creme gel pot in shade ‘undressed’.

It’s a lovely taupe-dark nude matte colour that dries into almost metallic (has slight shimmer in it). The gel is very creamy to use, dries instantly and lasts on for hours without budging. I absolutely love this colour! It’s a great neutral colour for every day wear or you could smoke it out for a night time look.

Purchased from: SephoraPriceline 3ina and Topshop

Well, this is it for now! Hope you enjoyed my latest beauty haul and found the reviews & information useful!

Until next time lovelies,
